Hoboken City Council Creates Historic Special Improvement District

HOBOKEN, NJ — The Hoboken City Council voted last night in favor of creating a Special Improvement District (SID) aimed at revitalizing the city’s local economy. This historic measure passed 8-1 and the city will now turn its attention to implementing the forward-thinking plan. The district, which will be named the Hoboken Business Alliance, will encompass the entire City of Hoboken.  Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher, who was the Council representative on the SID Steering Committee releases the following statement:

“This is a historic moment for Hoboken that will bring the necessary focus and resources for the first time in over a decade to grow our local economy.  Our local businesses citywide are the backbone of the Hoboken economy providing important amenities to the residents of our urban village and the heart of what attracts people to live in and visit Hoboken,” said Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher.

“Getting to this point was a team effort that could not have happened without the vision, efforts and commitment of many.  I would like to personally thank all involved including my fellow SID Steering Committee members who worked tirelessly for 15 months, our SID consultant Stuart Koperweis who guided us through the process of determining if a SID was feasible for Hoboken, and Mayor Bhalla and my City Council colleagues who understood the positive and necessary impact this will bring to our City.  Last night’s vote resets the trajectory for Hoboken and establishes what I am confident will be a strong partnership between our local commercial property and business owners and our local government going forward.”

Local business and property owners and SID Steering Committee members Armando Luis (Sparrow Wine and La Isla), Eugene Flinn (Amanda’s, Elysian Cafe and Alfalfa) and Donna Garban (Little City Books), were also appointed by the City Council last night as the incorporating officers to the new District Management Corporation that will manage the Special Improvement District.
